No one knows for sure how the Crooked Tree came into being. But there it was, on the northwest corner of Dexter and County Streets in Milan.
Perhaps the Native Americans created the tree by bendinng it to mark a turn in the trail.
Perhaps the tree was bent as a seedling when a fence rail fell on it.
We know how the tree's life ended. In 1960, the Department of Public Works removed the tree and threw it in the dump. This probably happened in February or March.
Since then, the tree has become an icon for the City of Milan and many organizations in the area, who use pictures of the crooked tree as a logo.
