In 1980 the Owen-Illinois Company donated to the Milan Area Historical Society the Jim and Daisy Hack home, the remaining out-buildings and the property they are on.  The Society has kept the site for the purpose of restoring and maintaining it as a museum.  This home located at 775 Country Street, was built in 1888 and had always been occupied by the Hack family. It was built by William Hack’s sister, Olive Friend. William was Jim Hack’s father.  This home was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites on April 25, 1991. The Society also has developed a historical museum using the “Hack House” for the object of being able to preserve Milan's past for Milan's future.  Local history, artifacts, and items from Milan families are on display. It is open the third Wednesday of the month for programs or by special appointment. In 1998 the Society transferred the Hack House deed to the City of Milan for its preservation. The Society continues to use the House as its headquarters, have programs there, maintain the interior, and oversee and control all artifacts and collections. The City maintains the grounds and is restoring the house and buildings.
